At Somerville Rise Primary School, we offer students the opportunity to learn AUSLAN (Australian Sign Language) as part of our language program, guided by the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Learning AUSLAN helps students develop communication skills, cultural understanding, and confidence in expressing themselves in a visual language.
Students from Foundation to Year 6 participate in a 30 minute AUSLAN session each week. In AUSLAN classes, students explore vocabulary, grammar, and conversation skills through engaging, hands-on activities. They learn to understand and use signs, facial expressions, and body language to communicate effectively, while also gaining insight into Deaf culture and the experiences of Deaf Australians.
Our AUSLAN program encourages inclusivity, respect, and curiosity, helping students appreciate the value of different languages and cultures. By learning AUSLAN, students not only expand their communication skills but also develop empathy, confidence, and a broader understanding of the world around them.
Students from Foundation to Year 6 also participate in a 30 minute Library session each week where they have the opportunity to borrow a book to take home or read in their classroom.
