Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation is a social and emotional tool that we use at a tier 2 level to strengthen student social and emotional learning.

The program teaches students to recognise their emotions, understand how different feelings affect their body and behaviour, and develop strategies to regulate themselves independently. At Somerville Rise we run our "Zones on the Rise" groups which are small, teacher/ES led groups multiple times a week.

We recognise the importance of reducing student cognitive load within the wellbeing space. Our aim is to ensure students experience consistent, repeated exposure to the same skills and strategies taught in the classroom through our Tier 1 universal wellbeing approaches, including the Berry Street Education Model and the Respectful Relationships curriculum.

Students learn that:

  • All feelings are okay
  • Emotions fall into four coloured “zones”
  • There are tools and strategies to help move between zones when needed

Through consistent language and visuals across the school, students build the confidence to identify how they feel, ask for help and use regulation strategies in both learning and social situations.
