Consistent, Predictable Routines

At Somerville Rise Primary School, we believe children learn best when they feel safe, calm and confident. That’s why we prioritise consistent and predictable routines across every classroom.

When routines are clear and familiar, students know what to expect. This creates a strong sense of safety and belonging. Instead of worrying about what is happening next, children can focus their energy on learning.

Consistent routines help to:

  • Build emotional safety and reduce anxiety
  • Strengthen positive behaviour and self-regulation
  • Create smooth transitions between activities
  • Maximise learning time
  • Reduce “cognitive load” (mental overload)

At Somerville Rise, you will see:

  • Clear lesson structures that follow our Instructional Model
  • Shared language and expectations across year levels
  • Predictable daily schedules
  • Explicitly taught classroom routines
  • Calm, orderly transitions
  • Visual supports and reminders

‘Setting the Climate’ in Term 1

During the first 5 weeks of the school year we focus on developing strong consistent and predictable routines through our ‘Setting the Climate’ program. We know that developing routines and positive relationships at the beginning of the year ‘sets the climate’ for the rest of the school year.

During ‘Setting the Climate’ teachers exlicitly introduce, and spend time practising and refining classroom and school routines. Students build on their understanding of our school values and the expected learning behaviours in the classroom. This is also a time when teachers build relationships with their students, learning about specific needs of their students and personal interests.
