I am very excited to continue as Principal of Somerville Rise Primary School and continue to build on our excellent progress of 2023.
For those who don’t know me, I have strong connections to the area, having lived in Somerville for nearly a decade. My wife lived in the area and was a student at Somerville Rise.
Although I now live in Carrum Downs, my children have strong ties to the Westernport Basketball Association and Somerville Junior Netball Club. Our community is very important to me personally, and I believe it takes a village to raise our children!
I have taught and been an educational leader across many primary schools and love working with our teachers and young people to help them be the best they can be. I am passionate about ensuring our schools provide the best possible learning environment for all students. You may hear me say from time to time, if it isn’t good enough for my own children, it’s not good enough for anyone else’s.
Our school has undergone significant change in the past two years, and we continue to work towards providing an evidence-based teaching and learning approach to ensure all students work towards their best. We pride ourselves on our ability to nurture students to thrive in a happy, safe and inclusive environment. Our partnership with families is highly valued as we know connected communities get the best academic and wellbeing outcomes for their children.
We centre our relationships and environment around our three school values of Kindness, Curiosity and Creativity.
We understand the importance of early literacy and numeracy skills providing the foundations for all learning as well as contributing to self-esteem and take an evidence informed approach to ensure all students are given the best possible opportunity to grasp vital knowledge and skills in these areas. We are delighted at the early impact of these approaches, seeing our students achieving high results we haven’t seen before and more importantly the confidence and passion to read, write and engage in mathematics as a result of mastering the basics.
Our knowledge rich curriculum and access to The Arts, Library, and Environmental Science ensure students are exposed to all learning domains to not only understand the complex world around them, but begin to discover their passions and interests that can be further explored in secondary schooling.
Our PE and Sports programs ensure a connection to fit and healthy living and our Berry Street Education Model program teach important social and emotional wellbeing and how to regulate ourselves using strength based approaches to regulate emotions and behaviours that begin to setup our children for future success at school and life.
Over the past year we have invested heavily in teacher training and development, in 2024 we are one of 6 schools in the country working with the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO) to embed Explicit Teaching practices across the school.
